Finding Joy in the Journey: Self-Care, Reconnection, and Listening to Your Needs as a Small Business Owner

As a UX designer specializing in building websites for small businesses and non-profit organizations, I have the privilege of working with a diverse array of entrepreneurs. Among my valued clients are many BIPOC and women small business owners who bring a wealth of creativity, strength, and resilience to their endeavors. Today, I want to touch upon a topic that is sometimes overlooked in the hustle of running a business - the joy of the journey and how to find it amidst challenges.

Running a business can be incredibly rewarding but also comes with its fair share of stress and challenges. In the midst of juggling multiple responsibilities, it's crucial to prioritize joy and make time for self-care, reconnect with yourself, and listen to your needs.


Make Time for Self-Care

Self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Let me repeat that… SELF-CARE IS NOT A LUXURY; IT’S A NECESSITY. As small business owners, we often find ourselves sacrificing personal time for the sake of our businesses. However, remember that a healthy, happy entrepreneur is at the heart of a thriving business. 


Carve out time in your busy schedule for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Whether it's a leisurely walk, a yoga session, a favorite hobby, or simply a quiet moment with a cup of tea, these activities can rejuvenate you and boost your mood.


Reconnect with Yourself

Running a business can sometimes make us lose touch with our inner selves. It's essential to regularly reconnect with yourself and remind yourself of your passions, dreams, and values. This reconnection can bring a fresh perspective, inspire new ideas, and even help you rediscover the joy in your business journey.


Consider setting aside a few moments each day for quiet reflection. You might also consider journaling as a way to express your thoughts and feelings, celebrate your victories, and reflect on lessons learned.


Listen to Your Needs

Listening to your own needs is as important as listening to your customers' needs. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Do you need assistance in some areas of your business? Or perhaps you need to take a step back and take a break? 


Acknowledging your needs and taking steps to address them can make a significant difference in your overall well-being and the success of your business. Reach out for help when you need it - whether it's hiring an additional team member, seeking advice from a mentor, or using professional services for tasks outside of your expertise.


Finding joy in your entrepreneurial journey is about more than success and profits. It's about embracing self-care, reconnecting with yourself, and listening to your needs.
